Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou

The Monastery, according to the surviving documents, seems to have been founded in the 11th century. In 1393 it was proclaimed by Patriarch Antonios, Patriarchal and Stavropegic. In 1497 a fire destroys the monastery and the Moldavian rulers rebuilt it. In the mid-17th century it numbered about 700 monks.

The modern Catholic of the Koutloumousiou Monastery was built in 1540 and was decorated by painters of the Cretan School. The wooden temple is one of the finest of Mount Athos and was constructed in the 19th century. There the miraculous image of the Mighty Protection is kept. The library contains among others 662 manuscripts, the 100 of which are parchments. Feast Day: Transfiguration of Jesus.
