Description

In the icon of the Annunciation we see the Archangel Gabriel and Virgin Mary in their unique encounter, where the Archangel delivers to her the joyful message that She is going to be the mother of Christ.

In this unique and collective piece of Byzantine art the magnificent theological details of the icon are protrayed. The Angel, since he is delivering the message, is moving, something quite obvious by the fact that his legs are open. He is wearing a ribbon on his head, which is the physical expression of the mental prayer. The illustration of the head isn’t a facing forward one. He is illustrated partially, ¾ of his face is depicted, while both of his eyes are visible similarly with most of the Saints. Holy Mary appears sitting, which states a kind of certainty and she is also knitting. The artist wants to emphasize the human nature of Holy Mary since she remains human and works on human things. The maphorion, the cloth Holy Mary is wearing, is depicted in a dark color, since according to the Orthodox tradition it symbolizes devoutness.
