Description

Lithography with the Ascension of Jesus

The Ascension of Jesus, in Christianity, is the ascent of Jesus Christ into heaven on the 40th day after his Resurrection. Then he said to the apostles: «Go forth to every part of the world, and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. Those who believe it and receive baptism will find salvation». After that Jesus was taken up into heaven and he took his seat at the right hand of God. In Christian art, the ascending Jesus is often shown blessing an earthly group below him, signifying the entire Church. By the 6th century, the iconography of the ascension had been established and by the 9th century, ascension scenes were being depicted on domes of churches.
