This unique work of art with the representation of Baptism of the Christ is an icon in antique painting technique. The iconographer, Father Pefkis, used gold sheets for the background and natural wood which was artificially aged by hand. Father Pefkis is a graduate of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy of Mount Athos (Athonite Academy) and he is a teacher of hagiography himself.

This is an excellent icon from father Pefkis which shows his dedication to traditional techniques and byzantine style. According to Orthodox and Byzantine tradition Baptism of Christ is filled with symbolisms.
The Baptism represents His death and resurrection and symbolizes the salvation of the world. In representations of Baptism, Jesus always appears in the centre of the scene in river Jordan while John the Baptist pours water on his head and angels stands on the side. In Orthodox icons of Baptism, Christ is blessing and sanctifies the waters.
Icon in antique painting technique
This unique handmade icon in antique painting technique has been created on natural wood and father Pefkis used 22 carats gold sheets for the background. With absolute dedication to the traditional methods he is also using colors processed mainly with egg and other traditional materials. The painted surface is covered with pure beeswax to keep the colours bright as new.
This icon bears his signature and a seal of authenticity. Father Pefkis is a graduate of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy of Mount Athos and in his workshop he is creating icons mostly of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period always with the style of the macedonian school.
