The holy, glorious and all-laudable Apostle Peter is the leader of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. His feast is celebrated on June 29 along with the Apostle Paul. On being raised by the Lord to the dignity of an Apostle, he followed him from the beginning of his preaching of salvation up until the very Passion, when, in the court of Caiaphas the high priest, he denied Him thrice because of his fear of the Jews and of the danger at hand. But again, after many bitter tears, he received complete forgiveness of his transgression. He left two (General) Epistles to the Church of the Greek Orthodoxy, known as I Peter and II Peter.
The lithographic icon of St. Peter has been placed by the monks who live at the Holy Hut of St. George on Mount Athos, in a wood derivative that has been worked with wax and resin. By applying high temperature, the wood took this particular shape and its distinctive black color.
This unique work of Byzantine art has been coated with gloss varnish in order to remain unchanged over time.
