Archangel Gabriel – Antique Serigraph | Father Pefkis
35.00€ – 90.00€
Archangel Gabriel, the one of the two heads of the angelic forces, was the one who brought the news to Joachim and Anna that they will give birth to Virgin Mary. The icon is crafted by the hands of father Pefkis in his Byzantine hagiography workshop.
Since 1980 the Byzantine hagiography workshop of Father Pefkis proceeds in the production of portable icons of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period, contributing in this way both to the conservation as well as the widest possible transmission of the Mount Athos cultural heritage.
In this specific work of Byzantine art, Archangel Gabriel has been painted on canvas with a sense of responsibility and absolute adherence to the traditional techniques and methods. Archangel Gabriel, the one of the two heads of the angelic forces, was the one who brought the news to Joachim and Anna that they will give birth to Virgin Mary. He also told Joseph in a vision, to take the Holy Child and His mother and flee to Egypt because they were in real danger.
He is depicted with wings so as to be understood that he is an immaterial and spiritual being and he is also holding a scepter, symbol of authority and power, which God gave him. With his left hand he is holding a globe that symbolizes the world.
