On November 8, the Holy Church of the Greek Orthodoxy celebrates the Synaxis of the Supreme commanders Michael and Gabriel and of the other bodiless and heavenly orders. This celebration is of particular importance since Archangel Michael holds a leading and dominant position among the Archangels in the Old and New Testament. The icon has been crafted with high quality materials and the unique method of the loyal depiction of the forms that the Byzantine hagiography workshop of Father Peukis follows. The details stand out with their vivid tone as well as the outline of the form of the Archangel and the folds of his mantle.
The painted surface has been covered with pure beeswax in order to maintain intact with its bright colors. The artwork has the signature of the Athonite academy student and well-known painter and priest father Peukis. In the gold background of the icon it is written in capital letters “Michael the chief commander”. The movement of the Archangel is highlighted by his large waving wings and his hands that are outstretched in a diagonal axis. His face is youthful while his features are highlighted by the open proplasmos of the flesh which has been painted with brush strokes by following the Byzantine tradition and is crowned with his curly blond-brown hair which have a symmetrical layout.
