On November 8, the Holy Church of the Greek Orthodoxy celebrates the Synaxis of the Supreme commanders Michael and Gabriel and of the other bodiless and heavenly orders. This celebration is of particular importance since Archangel Michael holds a leading and dominant position among the Archangels in the Old and New Testament.
The details stand out with their vivid tone as well as the outline of the form of the Archangel and the folds of his mantle. The lithographic icon of Archangel Michael has been placed by the monks of the Holy Hut of St. George at the Skete of St. Anne on Mount Athos, in a wood derivative that has been worked with wax and resin.
By applying high temperature, the wood took this particular shape and its distinctive black color.
This unique work of Byzantine art has been coated with gloss varnish in order to remain unchanged over time.
