Description

The Athonite heather honey is a unique monastic product from the Skete of Saint John the Baptist that belongs to the Iviron Monastery. Straight from the Monk’s beehives at the Hut of Saint Nicolas on Mount Athos, Monk Akakios guarantees for the exceptional quality and great nutritional value of this unique monastic product.

Among the other honey-based products of Mt Athos the sousoura honey derives from the plant heather or heath. Heath is a low evergreen shrub with small bell-shaped pink or purple flowers. Honey of sousoura is considered as one of the rarest and best honeys with incredible taste and very distinctive flavor. The spring and autumn heather (sousoura) is of the most important bee plants of Greece and is being produced all over the country.

It has a characteristic delicate aroma, leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste in the mouth and crystallizes very quickly, within 1-2 months of production. The honey easily returns to its original state if heated at relatively low temperatures (less than 70o C). It is a product with high nutritional value and a very powerful tonic for the body thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

It is available via the Mount Athos Product Exhibition. The profits are used for the support and renovation of the Holy Cell.
