The twenty sacred monasteries and the twelve sketes of Mount Athos are presented in their hierarchy. The number of monasteries is constant. According to the Charter of Mount Athos, the founding of the twenty-first monastery is forbidden. In the event that the number of monks grows so as to create crowding to them, then they reside in sketes and cells. The book also contains a section on the relics and hermits of Mount Athos.
Mount Athos covers an area of approximately 360 square kilometers. It has been established as the Virgin Mary’s Garden. According to the tradition, after her landing on a trip to Cyprus, admiring the beauty of the landscape, she asked for her Son to be given to her as a gift.
Monasticism in Athos is a tradition with a history that goes beyond the millennium. Of all monastic communities in the history of the Orthodox Church, only the monastic state of Mount Athos continues to survive, constituting a frontier of Eastern Christianity.
