Description

This book is the result of the author’s age-long collection of primary material, as the documents, photographs and personal items at his disposal come from the personal archive of Captain Giaglis. and his Corps. This is a narration of the Macedonian Struggle in Greece and the Balkan Wars. Before dealing with the events of the main phase of the Macedonian Struggle (1904-1908) starring the leading fighter Pavlos Melas, the author refers to the preceding events and any significant event that followed them (Ilinden, role of Consulates, National Defense Centers, Giannitsa Lake, the struggle in Serres and Nigrita Region, the role of women, etc.). Then he refers to the participation of Halkidiki (quoting facts and names) and the contribution of Mount Athos to the Struggle. The main chapter describes, in every detail, the exemplary action of the brave Macedonian fighter (and main hero) Kapetan Georgios Giaglis and of his heroic Corps against the Bulgarians Komitadji and the Turks. His life story unfolds, starting with his childhood and ending with his last years on Mount Athos, where he was tonsured and died as a monk. The work is enriched with 250 rare photographs. In conclusion, through this book’s 400 pages the reader gets a clear and complete picture of the events of this unexplored or at least poorly researched historical period, and of its heroes, who gave us our precious freedom thanks to their immense self-sacrifice.
