Description
Icon with Crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Naturally Aged Wood
A serigraph at which the iconographer monk has chosen the theme of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus at the Cross of martyrdom and below Him we can see Virgin Mary looking at Her Son with agony and deep pain because Her only Son is suffering. At the left side there is Saint John, the favorite Apostle of Jesus, who stands helpless and watches the Crucifixion.
Under the Cross there are other figures who are often included in depictions of this subject. These are the three other women, all of them known with the name Mary. Among them was Mary Magdalene. We can also see that Virgin Mary is depicted mourning. The Crucifixion of Jesus is the ultimate act of love from God towards humanity. Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself and offered to all people atonement and salvation. Crucifixion is one of the most common iconographic themes, as it contains strong symbolism.
Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise
This is a unique icon, not only because of the beautiful iconography that shows the skills of the monk but also of the wood which was used by the monk who created this artwork. This naturally aged wood was part of a cell at Mount Athos but when monks renovated the place and replaced the beams and doors, they thought that these pieces of wood could be used to make icons. The wood that was used at this icon came from a renovated cell and it has been carefully cut and preserved by monks with excellent techniques on processing wood. Renovation works are necessary at many cells so they can remain in good condition and monks can continue to live there.
As this icon is handmade and the wood processing is made exclusively by hand there might be small differences at the wood but not on the representation
