Description

Iconostasis with Virgin Mary Glykofilousa and Archangels Michael & Gabriel on naturally aged wood

An iconostasis on naturally aged wood from Mount Athos. It is Known that the original icon of Virgin Mary Glykofilousa was property of Victoria, wife of the senator Symeon, who, in order to save it threw it into the sea. The icon, floating upright on the waves, reached the arsanas of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was received with great honour and rejoicing by the fathers of the Monastery. At the point on the shore where they placed the icon, holy water gushed out. The face of Virgin Mary Sweet Kissing (Glykofilousa) is always close to the face of her child. Christ is nesting inside her arms.

Major General Michael is portrayed with all his splendor as a Commander of the Insolent Forces. The faithful and devoted to God Archangel Michael is the defender of the poor and weak people. Archangel Gabriel, the one of the two heads of the angelic forces, was the one who brought the news to Joachim and Anna that they will give birth to Virgin Mary. He also told Joseph in a vision, to take the Holy Child and His mother and flee to Egypt because they were in real danger.

Blessed wood that came out of Paradise

A beautiful iconostasis which has the structure of a triptych. These pieces of wood has been carefully cut and preserved by monks with excellent techniques on processing wood. These pieces of naturally aged wood were parts of a ceiling beam or a door but when monks renovated the cell and replaced them, they thought that these pieces of wood could be used to make beautiful artworks. The monks, with absolute respect, kept the old pieces of the wood and after the required maintenance they reuse them as a base for this beauriful iconostasis. Renovation works are necessary at many cells so they can remain in good condition and monks can continue to live there.
