First day in Paradise – Antique Painting Technique – handmade by father Pefkis

The iconography depicting the First Day in Paradise after the Second Coming of the Lord follows the Athonite style. Impressive with vivid colors, it is full of symbolisms.

Jesus, seated on a glorious throne, is surrounded by the battalions of angels. At his foot two wild animals are sitting calmly and subservient. Behind the throne of the Lord some buildings can be seen. Next to Jesus the robber who was also crucified at Calvary is depicted. He carries his cross and enters heaven after he won a place there with his repentance just before he died.

What does the icon First Day in Paradise symbolize?

Christ Himself has told people how his Second Coming would be. “When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels are with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne” (Matt. 25, 31). Christ, in his second coming on earth will not come quietly, like the first time, but with all His glory.

The Second Coming of the Lord is not the end of the world but essentially the beginning. It is not the destruction of everything but essentially the restoration. It is the time when everything will have real meaning because it will be renovated by the presence of Christ.

After the Second Coming, the First Day in Paradise will follow only for the righteous. Everything will be bright by the presence of Lord, as Paradise is defined by His presence.

The iconography has been crafted in the workshop of father Pefkis, former student of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy on Mount Athos. It has been crafted on carved wood and was covered with pure beeswax to withstand the ravages of time.
