But there is another benefit of pennyroyal. It has been used since ancient years as a pest repellant and insecticide to keep fleas away from pets and humans and to repel mosquitos and gnats. Pennyroyal was used from many years ago to flavor food and wine and to make tea because the leaves of the pennyroyal plant are more aromatic than other mint varieties.
Pennyroyal is used for colds, pneumonia and other breathing problems. It is also used for stomach pains, gas, intestinal disorders and liver and gallbladder problems. It is also used to control muscle spasms, cause sweating and increase urine production. Some people use it as a stimulant and to counteract weakness. The leaves of this herb have also been used for influenza, abdominal cramps as well as in the treatment of diseases such as smallpox and tuberculosis.
Pennyroyal is also used to kill germs, keep insects away and treat skin diseases. In foods, pennyroyal is used for flavoring. Its action is carminative, diaphoretic, stimulant and emmenagogic and is principally employed for the last-named property in disorders caused by sudden chill or cold. It is also beneficial in cases of spasms, hysteria, flatulence and sickness, being very warming and grateful to the stomach.
