Description

Hagiography with the Holy Family

This particular hagiography depicts the Holy Family. It is depicted the Most Holy Theotokos with St. Joseph, who holds in one hand the lily, the symbol of Jesus’ capture of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the other two white pigeons. In front of them is the little Christ dressed in orange imitation.

According to the New Testament, St. Joseph was the fiance of the Virgin Mary. He was a descendant of David, and he came from Bethlehem but lived in Nazareth. After the birth of Christ, he settled with the Virgin Mary in Egypt as the angel of the Lord informed them that Christ was about to be slaughtered by Herod. After Herod’s death, Joseph with Mary and the divine infant return to Nazareth.

Joseph refers to the New Testament for the last time in the return journey from Jerusalem when the twelve-year-old Jesus taught in the Temple of Solomon. Both the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic proclaim him as a saint. His memory is celebrated on the first Sunday after Christmas.

Saint Joseph and Virgin Mary serve the mystery of the divine incarnation of the Lord. The image with the Holy Family is a post-Byzantine representation, which is here hand-crafted in a work crafted by the method of cartography from the workshop of Father Pefkis.
