Hagiography with Virgin Mary Vrefokratousa
The icon of Virgin Mary Vrefokratousa (Child Holding) is a variation of the type of Virgin Mary Odigitria. The Virgin Mary here has a green tunic, a spine of the same color and a bright red tomb with a triangular opening in front of the chest. She is portrayed in a bust, turning her body and tilting her head toward Christ she holds with her left hand. The right hand brings it to the chest in a prayer motion.
Christ is dressed in white tunic and orange itham. With his right hand on the edge of Mother’s neck he blesses, while on the left he holds a closed scroll. On the conical throat, Christ’s head forms a small movement and his gaze is towards the viewer. On the upper right and left of the halo of Virgin Mary, on the golden plain, the highlighted sign MR TH is mentioned.
Hagiography in antique painting technique
The icon with Panagia Vrefokratousa (Child Holding) has been crafted by Father Pefkis and bears his signature, which also means the authenticity of this copy, which thus bears the seal of the tradition of Mount Athos.
Hagiography has been crafted with excellent quality materials in natural wood. The painted surface is covered with a pure beeswax to keep it intact with bright colors. The handmade antique painting technique, which has been applied by the painter Father Pefkis, a graduate of the Athonian School, makes the icon collectible.
The Byzantine iconography of Father Pefkis, since 1980, deals with the production of copies of portable icons of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period in accordance with the Athonite style.
