Description

HAGIOGRAPHY OUR LADY OF VLADIMIR – FATHER PEFKIS – ATHONITE ECCLESIASTICAL ACADEMY

The Russian iconography in its first period, during the 11th and 12th century, was directly influenced by the Byzantine iconography while many of its hagiographers were Greek. The most famous work of this period is Our Lady of Vladimir, the Holy protectress of Russia and one of the most venerated Orthodox icons.

It is a version of the Eleousa, tenderness type, with the Christ child snuggling up to his mother’s cheek while blessing at the same time. The strong feelings of affection linking the two forms are expressed uniquely, by the way they engage and the unprecedented expression of Virgin Mary’s face. The subtle sadness and melancholy are captured in Virgin Mary’s look which heralds the upcoming Passion.
