Description

In this hagiography which has been crafted on natural wood, Saint Anthony is depicted parapet. His life as well as his exemplary consistency, consist a true life example. The exercise and isolation, as suggested by great Anthony, does not mean perfect body inertia but balanced encounter with the soul. Prayer and fasting both consist important parts of the monk’s activity, necessary aids for the achievement of human perfection. As the open scroll in the hand of the Saint mentions, his fight against the demons made his exercise in the desert a big “school” for every ascetic.

The hagiography bears the hallmark of the Byzantine icons hagiography workshop which faithfully follows the Athonite tradition. Saint Anthony is honored by the church on the 17th of January. The icon is particularly common and among the favorite icons of the Holy hermitages and monastic brotherhoods.
