Description

Hagiography with the Supper at Emmaus

The hagiography depicting the appearance of the Risen Jesus Christ to his two disciples while they are moving towards Emmaus is an excellent example of Byzantine art.

This is a scene described in the E Gospel. Two students go to Emmaus. As they walk, they talk to each other about the Passion and the Cross of the Lord. The Risen Jesus appears and walks along the street without them recognizing him.

The Gospel mentions the name of only one of the two disciples, Cleopa. The second student is obviously the writer of the Gospel, Luke, as mentioned in the corresponding exscale and the gospel of the songs chanting on the same day along with the particular Gospel.

As the two students arrive at Emmaus, they insist that Jesus stay with them to host him in the evening. At the time of eating He blesses the table and so the disciples recognize their Teacher who has been raised a few days ago.

Hagiography: Characteristics

The work is crafted in natural wood. The quality painting has been adorned with a handmade finish. It is the work of Father Pefkis, a student of the Athonian Ecclesiastical Academy, who remains faithful to the Byzantine art as taught on Mount Athos. His works bear a signature of authenticity. They are covered with pure beeswax so they remain unchanged in time.
