Description

In the iconography of the Crucifixion, Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, is expressing with her look the pain that she is feeling for her Son. On the right side, John, the beloved disciple, is depicted bowing his head while expressing sorrow.

The skull at the bottom of the cross is known as the Skull of Golgotha. According to the Christian tradition that skull is the skull of Adam, who was also the first human being to die. Christ is called the second Adam by Apostle Paul.

This unique iconography has been crafted on natural wood while the background is adorned with ormolu leaves. It has been painted in the hagiography workshop of father Pefkis, former graduate of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy of Mount Athos, and has been covered with pure beeswax in order to withstand the ravages of time.
