Description

Icon with Saint Seraphim of Sarov on Naturally Aged Wood

A serigraph with the representation of Saint Seraphim of Sarov who was born in 1759 in the city of Kursk in Russia and when he was 18 years old he decided to dedicate his life to God and become a monk in the monastery of Sarov and later was ordained a deacon. During the day he follows all the regulations of the monastery, but at night he leaves in the forest, at his deserted cell, where he spends his hours in prayer.

Many people came to the monastery to confess and many miracles have been recorded by patients. In 1833 AD after having taken the Holy Communion and after the end of the Divine Liturgy he asked for forgiveness from all his brothers. A little later they found him kneeling in a prayer position in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary, with the cross on his neck and his hands on his chest in the shape of a cross. He died there.

Blessed Wood that Came Out of Paradise

That piece of naturally aged wood used to be part of a door leaf at a cell at Mount Athos. When the cell was renovated because it has suffered many damages through years monks kept the pieces of that old wood to use them as a base at the icons they create. Renovation works were necessary so the cell could  remain in good condition and monks can continue to live there. Every part of this cell is connected with the monks who lived there and carries within blessings and prayers from many years ago. At Mount Athos there are dozens of cells and some of them are located there for centuries. The old wood has been carefully cut and preserved by monks with excellent techniques on processing wood.
