The Vin icon or Η ΑΜΠΕΛΟC depicting Jesus and the Twelve Apostles!

The “Η ΑΜΠΕΛΟC”in Greek or The Vine icon depicts Jesus sitting near the top of a many-branched grape vine, and around him in the branches are the Twelve Apostles.

It takes its name from John 15:5, and in fact that is the text generally shown in the open Gospels held by Jesus in examples of this type: “II am the vine, you the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.”

The Vine icon – Depiction

This Orthodox icon first appeared in the 15th century. Christ sits as though He is enthroned at the bifurcation point of the vine’s branches. He has an open Gospel on His knees. His arms are raised high giving a benediction with both hands. Branching out from the trunk of the vine are twelve shoots where the Apostles sit on the branches. Peter and Paul are closest to Christ. They hold either a book or a scroll.

The Vine icon has been crafted with high quality materials and the unique method of the loyal depiction of the forms that the Byzantine hagiography workshop of Father Pefkis faithfully follows. The details stand out with their vivid tones.

The painted surface has been covered with pure beeswax in order to maintain unchanged over the passage of time. The background of the icon stands out with its gold – bright color.

This unique work of art has the signature of the Athonite academy graduate and well-known painter and priest father Pefkis. He faithfully follows the technique of icon painting and artificial aging as it was taught to him on Mount Athos.

The famous Greek Hagiographer Father Pefkis!

The icon has been crafted by Father Pefkis, who has studied for four years at the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy on Mount Athos. He was taught the art of byzantine iconography by monk – professor of hagiography, Ioannis Branos, one of the most distinguished and skilled connoisseurs of the Byzantine Iconography!

The byzantine hagiography workshop of Father Pefkis since 1980 is responsible for the creation of Byzantine Replicas according to the Athonite Hagiographical Tradition.

 

The Hagiography bears a seal of authenticity on its back side which proves that it is a genuine work of Byzantine art.
