The Russian iconography of Virgin Mary Kasperofskayia in its first period, during the 11th and 12th century, was directly influenced by the Byzantine iconography while many of its hagiographers were Greek.

Virgin Mary Kasperofskayia | History of the icon

The most famous work of this period is the hagiography of our lady of Virgin Mary Kasperofskayia, the Holy protectress of Russia and one of the most venerated Orthodox icons. It is a version of the Eleousa, tenderness type, with the Christ child snuggling up to his mother’s cheek while blessing at the same time. The strong feelings of affection linking the two forms are expressed uniquely, by the way they engage and the unprecedented expression of Virgin Mary’s face. The subtle sadness and melancholy are captured in Virgin Mary’s look which heralds the upcoming Passion.

This unique work of Byzantine art, Virgin Mary Kasperofskayia has been crafted with the method of silk screen painting. It comes straight from the Hagiography Workshop of Father Pefkis, which is located in Trikala, Greece.

It has been coated with pure beeswax in order for his colors to remain unchanged over the passage of time. The handmade details of the icon stand out and add extra charm to this unique hagiography.

The famous Greek Hagiographer Father Pefkis!

The icon has been crafted by Father Pefkis, who has studied for four years at the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy on Mount Athos. He was taught the art of byzantine iconography by monk – professor of hagiography, Ioannis Branos, one of the most distinguished and skilled connoisseurs of the Byzantine Iconography!

The Hagiography bears a seal of authenticity on its back side which proves that it is a genuine work of Byzantine art.
