Description

Icon with Saint Porphyrios on Naturally Aged Wood

This is a beautiful serigraph with Saint Porphyrios who was born in the little village of St. John Karystia, in the province of Evoia. His parents, Leonidas and Eleni Bairaktaris christened him Evangelos. According to tradition he became a monk at the age or fourteen. He served in the skete of Kafsokalyvia, in the Cell of St. George, under two spiritual fathers: Fr. Panteimon and Fr. Ionnakios.

Later he was forced by pleurisy to depart the Holy Mountain and he returned to his birthplace, where he was elevated to the priesthood at the age of 21 by Porphyrios III, Archbishop of Mount Sinai and Raithu. With the outbreak of World War II he became a hospital chaplain in Athens. His later years were devoted to the construction of the Holy Convent of the Transfiguration of the Savior. After 1984 he returned to Mount Athos, occupying the same cell which he had earlier in life been forced to abandon.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

This naturally aged wood that was used at the icon with the representation of Saint Porphyrios came from a renovated cell from Mount Athos which has suffered many damages through years. Renovation works were necessary to remain in good condition so monks can continue to live there. Monks are replacing doors, window shutters or ceiling beams but they are keeping the pieces of wood so they can reuse them. They are cutting and processing the wood with excellent techniques so they can use it later for their artworks such as these icons. These pieces of wood are part of the history of Mount Athos. So monks reuse them and they are giving us a small piece of this history.
