Description

Lithography with Virgin Mary Trixerousa

A lithography with the representation of Virgin Mary Trixerousa which means «with three hands». The original icon of Trixerousa was the icon at which Saint John of Damascus had prayed holding his severed right hand. According to Orthodox tradition with that hand he had written his speeches in favour of the holy icons and which had been cut off by the malice of the Eikonomachi. Theotokos re-attached the dead hand of Saint John of Damascus and brought it to life again. After that he dedicated to Virgin Mary a silver votive offering in the shape of a hand, which is placed in such a way on the icon that it appears that She has a third hand.

Lithography: Characteristics

A beautiful lithography with the representations of Virgin Mary Trixerousa. Monks are learning the technique of lithography at iconography workshops at Mount Athos so they can create with love and patience these excellent artworks. At this icon the monk used a lithographic copy of Byzantine art to create this artwork. He also applied the process of artificial maturation by hand to give this icon unique aesthetic value. Lithography is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water.
