All virtues are gathered in the face of the Most Holy Theotokos. Throughout the centuries, the virtues, gifts, and infinite wonders of the Virgin Mary inspire hagiographers who create distinguished icons in its form that are full of symbolism.
The Virgin Mary Full of Grace (Kecharitomene) received this particular nickname from Archangel Gabriel himself during the Annunciation. “Be happy Kecharitomene, Lord is with you. You are blessed among all the women”, the archangel told Maria when he visited her to announce her that she would bring the Messiah to the world. Kecharitomene means full of the grace of God, full of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. .
In the icon with Virgin Mary Full of Grace, Theotokos is impressed to cling to her son affectionately. The faces of the two figures touch each other while the little Jesus touches his mother’s face with one hand, as all the children do in the arms of their mother wanting to feel warm and secure. The Virgin Mary wears a blue tunic and a dark purple mantle, the color of which gives Byzantine magnificence to the icon. In her left hand she holds a closed scroll. Jesus wears orange chiton.
Using a lithographic copy of Byzantine art, the hagiographer, a monk of Mount Athos, created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, followed by monks in the Virgin Mary’s Garden.
