The Hospitality of Abrah
The icon The Hospitality of Abraham depicts the three angels who visited Abraham and accepted his warm hospitality. This biblical event is a preface to the Holy Trinity.
For the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, apart from the explicit testimonies of the New Testament, we have hints in the Old Testament. One of these hints is the appearance of God in Abraham in the form of three men.
In Genesis (18: 1), while Abraham was sitting near the Oak, where he had set up his tent, three unknown men visited him. Abraham welcomed them with cordiality and love, even though they were unknown to him. He then offered them a rich lunch. During the conversation they had all together, the unknown guests announced to Abraham that his wife, Sara, despite her advanced age, would have a child in a year, as it did.
The Fathers of the Church in this biblical event saw a preface to the mystery of the Holy Trinity, which was fully revealed in the New Testament. That’s why the hospitality of Abraham was portrayed in the relevant picture. Because after the biblical narrative, two of the three men appeared as Angels, it was all three in the angelic form. Such a picture existed and was celebrated in the ancient times in the place where Abraham’s hospitality took place, according to the testimony of Eusebius of Caesarea.
