Description

The holy, glorious and all-laudable Apostle and Mark the Evangelist is the author of the Gospel of Mark, the companion of the Apostle Paul (as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles), and is numbered among the Seventy Apostles.

His feast day is celebrated on April 25, and his symbol is the winged lion.

One of the central theological themes in the Gospel of Saint Mark is the power of God achieving what is humanly impossible. The Apostles performed remarkable miracles with Christ (Mark 16:20) and the Holy Spirit (Mark 13:11) working through them. His disciples were told to go into the world and preach the Gospel to all creatures (Mark 13:10, 16:15), and that is what they did.

HAGIOGRAPHY OF MARK THE EVANGELIST – COMPOSITION

Particularly elaborate is the execution of this composition by the monk-hagiographer father Pefkis, a former student of the Athonite Academy on Mount Athos. The color rendering of Apostle Mark is evidence of a meticulous work of Byzantine art.

The use of shadings in the garments of the Apostle, describe the technical expertise, in the use of color and egg powder, by the talented hagiographer-monk.
