Mary Damascene: the iconograhpic details
This style of iconography belongs to the type of Eleousa. The original Byzantine masterpiece was carried by the Orthodox emigrants from Dodekanisa to Malta. When the orthodox church of the Greeks became a Uunite temple, they built a new one. The Virgin Mary, however, remained in the first place where she can be seen today, saddened away from her homeland.
The piece of art
The work is crafted in natural wood. The quality painting is adorned with a handmade finish. It is the work of Father Pefkis, a priest and student of the Athonian Church Academy, who in his workshop in Trikala reproduces copies of Byzantine icons. He remains faithful to the Byzantine art as taught in Mount Athos. His works bear a signature of authenticity and quality. The icon is naturally protected with beeswax in order to stay alive in time.
