Mount Athos Saffron from the Holy Cell of Saint Nicholas
The Mount Athos Saffron (Crocus) adds its fine aroma, wonderful taste and beautiful yellow color to foods. It is particularly used at Mount Athos during fasting, when eggs cannot be used, for its rich color and flavor.
In cooking: it exceptionally matches rice, pasta, sauces, chicken, lamb, fish-soups, potatoes, legumes, cakes etc. 15-17 stigmata (known as saffron) are enough for 4 portions of food, The stigmata are soaked in a cup of warm water before cooking and are then added to the food – or just the water can be added after being strained.
In tea: 10-12 stamens are enough for each cup of tea. It is also possible to mix it with other herbs for greater pleasure.
Properties: Crocus particularly leads to lipid reduction in the blood and better circulation, as well as nervous system balance.
The new batch of Mount Athos Crocus will be once again available on the 15th of May.
