Description

Myrrh from Mount Athos

The original Myrrh from Holy Cell of Saint Nicholaos is a genuine Athonite blessing. It is a beneficial oil containing a mixture of 57 different medicinal plants and fragrances.

Myrrh is also called “oil of thanksgiving”. Its symbolism in Orthodox tradition is very important, as Myrrh symbolizes the gifts of Holy Spirit.

Furthermore, Myrrh symbolizes the aroma of faith, the tenderness of the heart and the devotion to the Lord. As the Gospel mentions, a few days before the Crucifixion of Jesus, when he was in Bethany, at the house of Simon the leper, a woman approached him, holding an alabaster bowl of precious myrrh, with which she anointed His head (Mt. 26, 6- 7).

From the myrrh they have been named Myrfors. Those women who followed the Lord, along with Virgin Mary. They stayed with her during the Passion of Jesus, and took care of Jesus’ dead body by putting it into Myrrh, offering in this way prices to their teacher.

How is Athonite Myrrh made?

The preparation or baking of Myrrh is based on the biblical description of Moses in the Book of Exodus (Exodus 30, 22- 25).
