Engraved Lithography with the Nativity of Jesus

The Nativity of Jesus or Birth of Christ has long been counted as one of the biggest feasts. Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, was born of the Most Holy Virgin Mary in the city of Bethlehem during the reign of the emperor Augustus. According to Orthodox tradition Jesus was born in Bethlehem and since there was nowhere for Mary and Joseph to stay in the town, the infant was laid in a manger while angels announced his birth to a group of shepherds who worshipped him as Messiah and Lord. The Nativity is one of the greatest and most joyful events in the history of the world. The angel said to the shepherds, «Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people». The depiction of the nativity has been an important subject for Christian artists since the 4th century.

Engraved Lithography: Characteristics

A wonderful icon, which has been created with the technique of lithography and is upgraded in quality and aesthetics thanks to the engraved natural wood, but also the gold leaf, which is used in the background of the representation. The technique of lithography is very widespread and is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos, while at the same time it is used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. At this icon the monk used a lithographic copy of Byzantine art to create this artwork, while it is worth mentioning that the natural wood of the icon is worked exclusively by hand.
