Oregano is rich in antioxidants

Oregano is one of the most famous herbs. People have used it for thousands of years to add flavour to dishes and to relieve symptoms of many health conditions. The Greeks and Romans associated oregano with joy and happiness. The name comes from the Greek words «oros» meaning mountain and «ganos» meaning joy. Oregano is rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help fight damage from harmful free radicals in the body. The antioxidants thymol, carvacrol, limonene, terpinene, ocimene and caryophyllene gives the herb its flavor and scent.

Oregano: Properties

Oregano may help fight bacteria and reduce viral infection. In addition to fighting off bacteria, some studies have found that oregano and its components may also protect against some viruses. Carvacrol and thymol are two compounds in oregano that have been associated with antiviral properties. Oregano is also known that can decrease inflammation. People around the Mediterranean region have used oregano for centuries in herbal medicine to relieve symptoms of many ailments, including aching muscles, asthma, cramping, diarrhea, indigestion, colds and to boost overall health.

This herb is also rich in antioxidants. Dietary antioxidants help the body eliminate free radicals, which are toxic substances as a result from natural processes and environmental stresses. Oregano can also help with depression, bronchitis, painful menstrual cramps, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract infections and disorders, headaches, diabetes, bleeding after a tooth extraction and high cholesterol.

Preparation

Add a tablespoon of dried oregano in a pot and then put inside boiled water. Leave it for ten minutes and then strain it. If you want to add a bit of sweetness to your tea, try adding a small spoonful of honey.
