Our father among the Saints Alexander of Constantinople was the first bishop of Constantinople, having been the bishop of the city of Byzantium when the name of the city was changed to Constantinople. Alexander participated in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea and fought against the Arian heresy. His feast day is August 30.
The lithographic icon of St. Alexander has been placed by the monks who live at the Holy Hut of St. George on Mount Athos, in a wood derivative that has been worked with wax and resin. By applying high temperature, the wood took this particular shape and its distinctive black color.
This unique work of Byzantine art has been coated with gloss varnish in order to remain unchanged over time.
