This large byzantine icon is completely handmade by monks from the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos. The style of the Macedonian School of art, as it is ascribed by the monk-hagiographer father Luke, describes the ascetic figure of the wise and prolific hierarch in His liturgical vestment.
The Saint, who originates from Caesarea, had a great educational background which is illustrated in the orthodox hagiography since he is depicted with a large forehead. He was a courageous fighter of the Greek Orthodoxy and wrote several works of pedagogical and dogmatic nature as well as the Divine Service that that was named after him. He passed away in 379 A.D. at the age of 49 and this is the reason why he is pictured by the hagiographers with dark hair.
The decoration and polishing of the icon, made with pure gold 22Κ conveys inspires appreciation for the great work of Saint Basil. The Church honors his memory on January the 1st.
