Engraved Lithography with Saint Catherine

Saint Catherine or Great Martyr Saint Catherine or Catherine of Alexandria. According to Orthodox tradition she was the daughter of Constus, the governor of Alexandria. She devoted herself to study and it is known that a vision of Virgin Mary and Jesus persuaded her to become a Christian. When the persecutions began under Maxentius, she went to the emperor and rebuked him for his cruelty. He was surprised by her courage and he called the best pagan philosophers and orators to dispute with her.

He was hoping that they could make Catherine to refuse her faith and that would be a great victory for him. But after some time it was obvious that Catherine had won the debate. She was then scourged and imprisoned but twelve days later, when the dungeon was opened she came forth even more radiant and beautiful. The furious emperor condemned Catherine to death on a spiked breaking wheel, but, at her touch, it shattered. After that he ordered to be beheaded.
