Description

Saint Demetrius, patron saint of Thessaloniki, is depicted with his military clothing in this unique and collectible artwork. He is holding a sword and a shield with his left hand and a spear with his right one while wearing the armor of a soldier.

In the iconography, the weapons represent the spiritual gifts but are also a reminder of the true life of the Saint who was centurion in the Roman army and martyred in Thessaloniki in the age of Diocletian. The monks-hagiographers from the Skete of Saint Anne, Minor on Mt Athos, portray St. Demetrius, in frontal position with his golden halo carved with the tsoukani technique.

This unique work of Byzantine art is adorned with 22K gold and is the result of hard work that requires skill and rigor. It is available from Mount Athos Products Exhibition with the approval and blessing of the monks-hagiographers who live on Mount Athos.
