Saint Demetrius – Handmade Hagiography
A handmade, unique artwork, exact replica of the icon that can be found at Vatopedi Monastery, which has been crafted by the Archon hagiographer Mr. Constantine Xenopoulos. The original icon can be found at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi where the Saint is depicted in bust.
This icon is completely handmade and has been made by using the artificial aging technique. It is a unique artwork that has been crafted by the Archon hagiographer of the Patriarchate of Alexandria Mr. Constantine Xenopoulos, student and later professor of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy of Mount Athos. The original icon can be found at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi where the Saint is depicted in bust.
The colors that have been used are bright and remain unchanged through the passage of time since the hagiographer uses egg powder colors and faithfully follows the traditional hagiography technique.
The handmade process of the hagiography surface and the artificial aging of the icon, in combination with the vivid colors that have been used, make this byzantine artwork unique.
From a technical point of view, the attribution of the face, with the wide surface of the warm ochre, the green shadows on the forehead, the red color used as well as the white linear lights that illuminate discreetly, liven up the face contributing to its expressive quality. The physiognomic type of the young warrior and Christian martyr is characteristic of the artistic style of the murals of Manuel Panselinos. This unique work of Byzantine art is readily available from Mount Athos Products Exhibition
