This is a great icon with the representation of Saint Efraim of Nea Makri on naturally aged wood from Mount Athos. This wood came from a renovated cell at Mount Athos. Every part of this cell is connected with the monks who lived there and carries within blessings and prayers from many years ago.

As this icon is handmade and the wood processing is made exclusively by hand there might be small differences at the wood but not on the representation

Description

Icon with Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri on Naturally Aged Wood

Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri lived from 1384 to 1426 and he is venerated as a martyr and miracle-working saint. He is a «newly revealed» saint and he has become one of the most beloved saints in the last thirty years. His martyric death is commemorated by the church May 5th and the discovery of his relics January 3rd. The relics were discovered through divine intervention in 1950, that’s 524 years after his death.

Accordind tradition he became a monk, took the monastic name of Ephraim and moved to Attica to live in the Monastery of the Annunciation of Our Lady on Mount Amomon. In 1424 the monastery was destroyed by marauding Ottoman Empire troops. Ephraim lived for another year as a hermit among the ruins of the monastery. In September 1425 he was captured in another Turkish raid. He was held captive and tormented for more than eight months, until he was finally tortured to death.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

The history of this icon with the representation of Saint Efraim of Nea Makri has started many years before the monk completes the representation of Saint Efraim on canvas. The wood was naturally aged as it was a part from a cell at Mount Athos which was renovated. It has been carefully cut and preserved by monks who created these collectible icons.

During renovation works monks are keeping the old pieces of wood and they are turning them into these excellent works of art. On the back side of the icon two parallel cross – beams have been placed to support the image as well as a leather hook. This wood carries the blessings and prayers of monks outside the borders of Mount Athos. Thanks to Mount Athos Exhibition, these collectible icons can be a great present for our friends and relatives.
