Description

Serigraph with Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri on Naturally Aged Wood

A serigraph of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri who lived from 1384 to 1426 and he is venerated as a martyr and miracle-working saint. He is a «newly revealed» saint and he has become one of the most beloved saints in the last thirty years. His martyric death is commemorated by the church May 5th and the discovery of his relics January 3rd. The relics were discovered through divine intervention in 1950, that’s 524 years after his death.

Accordind tradition he became a monk, took the monastic name of Ephraim and moved to Attica to live in the Monastery of the Annunciation of Our Lady on Mount Amomon. In 1424 the monastery was destroyed by marauding Ottoman Empire troops. Ephraim lived for another year as a hermit among the ruins of the monastery. In September 1425 he was captured in another Turkish raid. He was held captive and tormented for more than eight months, until he was finally tortured to death.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

That piece of naturally aged wood used to be part of a door leaf at a cell at Mount Athos. When the cell was renovated because it has suffered many damages through years monks kept the pieces of that old wood to use them as a base at the icons they create. Renovation works were necessary so the cell could  remain in good condition and monks can continue to live there. Every part of this cell is connected with the monks who lived there and carries within blessings and prayers from many years ago. At Mount Athos there are dozens of cells and some of them are located there for centuries. The old wood has been carefully cut and preserved by monks with excellent techniques on processing wood.
