Icon with Saint George on Naturally Aged Wood

At this icon there is the representation of Saint George on naturally aged wood. He was a soldier of Cappadocian Greek origins, member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian, who was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He became one of the most venerated saints and megalo-martyrs in Christianity. His father died for the faith when George was fourteen, and his mother returned with George to her homeland. A few years later, George’s mother died. George travelled to the capital Nicomedia and joined the Roman army. George was executed by decapitation on 23 April 303. A witness of his suffering convinced Empress Alexandra of Rome to become a Christian as well, so she joined George in martyrdom. His body was returned to Lydda for burial, where Christians soon came to honour him as a martyr.

Blessed Wood that Came out of Paradise

The history of this icon has started many years before the monk completes the representation of Saint George on canvas. The wood was naturally aged as it was a part from a cell at Mount Athos which was renovated. It has been carefully cut and preserved by monks who created these collectible icons. During renovation works monks are keeping the old pieces of wood and they are turning them into these excellent works of art. On the back side of the icon, with the representation of Saint George, two parallel cross – beams have been placed to support the image as well as a leather hook. This wood carries the blessings and prayers of monks outside the borders of Mount Athos. Thanks to Mount Athos Exhibition, these collectible icons can be a great present for our friends and relatives.

As this icon is handmade and the wood processing is made exclusively by hand there might be small differences at the wood but not on the representation
