Icon on naturally aged wood with Saint Irene Chrysovalantou
Saint Irene Chrysovalantou lived in the 9th century AD. in the years of Empress Theodora, who restored sacred icons.
Saint Irene was descended from Cappadocia. She was distinguished for her piousness as well as for her physical beauty and noble upbringing. These gifts attracted a distinguished man who asked Irene for marriage. Thus, Saint Irene tavelled for Constantinople. On the way, however, she passed from the monastery of Chrysovalantou. The encounter with the nuns attracted her so much that she made the decision to stay with them.
She returned to her home, sold her property to help poor people, while she donated the rest of the money to the monastery. She rejected the mundane and became a nun, living ascetic and holy life.
When the abbot of the monastery died, Irene, despite her refusal, was appointed her successor. As a reverend, she performed her duties perfectly. God, in fact, brought it with the prophetic and miraculous charisma. With her prayers she freed many of the demons. She sensed her death, which was peaceful.
The Church honors the memory of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou on July 28th.
