Hagiography with Gold depicting Saint Irene
The holy Great Martyr Irene was born in the city of Magedon in Persia during the fourth century. According to tradition she was of exceptional beauty and highly educated and was characterized by her great eloquence and intense religious zeal. Wishing to convert all the more pagans to Christianity, St. Irene went to Ephesus, where she taught the people and performed many miracles.
The Lord revealed to her that the end of her life was approaching. Then St. Irene left the city accompanied by six people. On the outskirts of the town, she found a new tomb in which no one had ever been buried. She went inside, directing her companions to close the entrance to the cave with a large stone, which they did. When Christians visited the cave four days later, they did not find the body of the Saint. St. Irene led thousands of people to Christ through her preaching, and by her example.
The Church continues to honor her memory and to seek her heavenly intercession. In this unique work of Byzantine art and Athonite style, Saint Irene is illustrated with diadem adorned with stones while with her left hand she is holding a cross. The garment is characterized by its excellent drapery, is blue in color and is not simply a decorative element of the hagiography but it actually helps the viewer detect the underlying messages of the icon as the blue color symbolizes the freshness and clarity. The handmade artwork serves the art of high theology.
