Icon with Saint Marina on naturally aged wood

A beautiful icon with Saint Margaret, also known as Margaret of Antioch in the West, and as Saint Marina the Great Martyr. According to tradition she was born in Antioch and she was daughter of a pagan priest. Her mother died soon after her birth and Margaret was nursed by a Christian. Having embraced Christianity and consecrated her virginity to God, Margaret was disowned by her father, adopted by her nurse and lived in the country keeping sheep. At some time Olybrius, Governor of the Roman Diocese of the East, asked to marry her, but with the demand that she renounce Christianity. Upon her refusal, she was cruelly tortured and then decapitated.

Blessed wood that came out of Paradise

The wood at this icon has been carefully cut and preserved by monks with excellent techniques on processing wood. This piece of naturally aged wood was part of a ceiling beam but when monks renovated the cell and replaced the beam, they thought that these pieces of wood could be used to make beautiful artworks. On the front of this icon they placed the canvas with the representation of Saint Marina of Andros. On the back side of the icon two parallel cross – beams have been placed to support the image as well as a leather hook. On Mount Athos there are dozens of cells and many of them are located there for centuries.
