Wood Carved Icon with Saint Nicholas

At this wood carved icon there is the representation of Saint Nicholas who is the patron saint of sailors. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. According to tradition Saint Nicholas is said to have visited the Holy Land but the ship he was on was nearly destroyed by a terrible storm. Then a miracle happened and he rebuked the waves, causing the storm to subside. According to another story he saved three innocent men from execution. Saint Nicholas appeared, pushed the executioner’s sword to the ground, released them from their chains, and angrily chastised a juror who had accepted a bribe.

This is a unique handmade work of art which is made with linden wood. It is well known that monks at Mount Athos have great skills at woodworking, treatment and preservation of wood something that is obvious not only from the wood carved icons but also from the wood carved iconostasis they make at their churches and monasteries.

For this particular wood carved icon the monk used the technique of micro-craftsmanship or micro-woodcarving in order to be depicted with every detail the forms and facial features of the saints. After the first process and rubbing of the wood comes the painting of the wood with ecological color and then follows the disinfestation process so that the wood stays in excellent condition for more than 100 years.
