The iconographers from the Skete of Saint Anne, Minor on Mount Athos have managed, with the use of egg powder color and 24k gold leaf, to convey the characteristics of the hagiography.
The illustrated Saint of the Greek Orthodoxy offered his services to the sick without asking for money. This is why he is called «Anargyros» and «Medicinal». It is widely known that the medical art in Byzantium was of a high level and Saint Panteleimon practiced this art and often cured his patients in a miraculous way.
In this handmade hagiography he is presented in a strictly frontal pose, holding with his right hand his medical tools and with his left one a wooden case with drugs. He is wearing a tunic in shades of blue decorated with stones in the neck, shoulders, arms, and toga. The incarnate person of the young Saint is painted with great skill while his gaze is turned towards the viewer.
The iconographers from the Skete of Saint Anne, Minor on Mount Athos have managed, with the use of egg powder color and 24k gold leaf, to convey the characteristics of the hagiography which characterize numerous works of Byzantine art over the centuries: expressive realism, spiritual fullness and intense plastic feeling.
