Hagiography with Gold depicting Saint Panteleimon

The memory of the Saint is celebrated on the 27th of July by the Orthodox Church that has named the Holy Great Martyr, Medicinal. The Patron Saint of Florina and Tilos was trained in medicine by Eufrosinos. In this specific hagiography he is depicted wearing a dark green tunic with a golden ribbon decorating his neck, shoulder and arms as well as a scarlet robe.

With his right hand he is holding tweezers, a tool of the medical art, while with his left one he is holding a brocaded small, wooden box. The entire composition is characterized by an expressive realism, a spiritual fullness and an intense plastic feeling.

The hagiographer -monk at the cell of Saint Makarii on Mount Athos uses wood in its original form. This unique work of Byzantine art is entirely hand crafted and has a background decorated with gold leaf. The way in which the painter handles light, in order to complete the move from the surface to the setting of the viewer, is impressive.
