Description

Icon on naturally aged wood with Saint Panteleimon

Saint Panteleimon was descended from Nicomedia. He lived in the years of Maximianus (286-305 AD). His father Eustorgios believed in ancient Greek Gods. But with the admonitions of Panteleimon he became Christian. His mother, Evouli, came from a Christian family.

Panteleimon was trained in medicine by Efrosynos. He was baptized Orthodox Christian by father Ermolaos, who was priest of the Church of Nicomedia.

Some point, a young man was bitten by a snake and died. Saint Panteleimon, relying on Christ, raised him.

The occasion for the martyrdom of the saint was another miracle he did. He once healed a blind man who reported the fact of his healing to the king, telling him that he was cured by Panteleimon in the name of Christ and now he believes himself. The king ordered to decapitate the healed blind man and bring him Panteleimon. Saint Panteleimon was brought to the king who ordered his torture to deny his faith.

Saint Panteleimon was tortured with various ways. He did not bow, however, since the Lord appeared in front of him in the form of the spiritual Ermolaus to give him courage.

In the end, the king ordered to decapitate him. But as soon as the executioner stretched out his hand to cut off the head of the saint with his sword, the sword bent and the iron melted. In front of this marvelous event, the soldiers who saw it happening in front of them became Christians.

The saint, then, voluntarily surrendered to his martyrdom. According to tradition, no blood was poured from his wounds, but milk and the olive tree where it had tied it suddenly caught up.
