Description

This clean and of great expressive depth hagiography, consists a unique work of Byzantine art that was made by the hagiographer George Sidiropoulos and is one of the great pieces that the Mount Athos Product Exhibition has to offer.

In this entirely handmade work of Byzantine art, Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia is depicted. It is an exceptional hagiography for the House of God and the homes of people who are familiar with Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia. On November 27, 2013, Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople approved the proposal for entering the hieromonk Porphyrios Kafsokalyvitis in the registry of the Saints of the Greek Orthodox Church. Elder Porphyrios was born in 1906 in the village of Agios Ioannis in Karystia province on Euboea and was baptized as Evangelos. While he was on Mount Athos he suffered a bout of pleurisy at about the age of nineteen and his elders sent him to a monastery outside Athos for treatment. At this monastery on Euboea he met the Archbishop of Sinai, Porphyrios, who, after observing that the young monk had been visited by God’s Grace, ordained him as a priest at the age of twenty. In June 1991, sensing the end of his life was near, and wishing to avoid a large public funeral, he left for the Hut of St. George at Kafsokalyvia on Mt Athos where he had been tonsured as a monk some seventy years earlier.

The hagiography of the Saint has been crafted on natural wood, is embellished with 22K gold and has been polished in order to maintain the shine of the gold unchanged over time.
